A line in the sand

At Clarmondial, we are working on scalable initiatives to better finance responsible sourcing and production. We believe that many of the issues that result in mismanagement of plastics are similar to those in agricultural supply chains, including poor data, loose supply chains and inadequate procurement structures.

We are excited that the pressing issue of plastic pollution is starting to be addressed, and thus to be an endorser of the Global Commitment to eradicate plastic waste and pollution at source, led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with UN Environment.

Signatories to the Global Commitment include companies representing 20% of all plastic packaging products globally. It aims to create a ‘new normal’ for plastic packaging. Targets will be reviewed every 18 months and become increasingly ambitious over the coming years. Businesses that sign the commitment will publish annual data on their progress to help drive momentum and ensure transparency.

Targets include:

  • Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use to reuse packaging models
  • Innovate to ensure 100% of plastic packaging can be easily and safely reused, recycled, or composted by 2025
  • Circulate the plastic produced, by significantly increasing the amounts of plastics reused

We look forward to continuing to engage with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and other partners to the Global Commitment to develop and implement financing solutions to tackle this issue.
